Not Proven: Can Supplements Prevent Herpes Outbreaks?
No supplement we found is shown to prevent herpes outbreaks. Lysine had no evidence of efficacy, the only zinc trial tested a cream, and vitamin C and echinacea were studied for colds. Prescription antivirals are the proven care. Reviralis Complete is a supplement, not an antiviral.

Direct answer01
Is any supplement shown to keep herpes outbreaks away?
No supplement we found is shown to prevent herpes outbreaks. Herpes has no cure, and prescription antivirals are the proven care (CDC, About Genital Herpes).
Antivirals are proven. Supplements, as tested so far, are not.
The CDC says antivirals shorten outbreaks, and daily suppression lowers recurrences and the chance of passing the virus to a partner (CDC, About Genital Herpes). That is care a clinician prescribes after talking with you.
Every source02
What does the evidence say, supplement by supplement?
Each source either tested something else or found no benefit.
| Idea | What the source shows |
|---|---|
| Lysine | Cochrane found no evidence of efficacy for preventing cold sores |
| Zinc | One 46-person trial of a cream: 5.0 versus 6.5 days; oral zinc has no cited herpes link |
| Vitamin C | Regular intake did not significantly cut colds in the general population; nothing on herpes |
| Echinacea | May slightly lower cold risk; not a herpes source; not in Reviralis |
| Stress reduction | Stress and recurrence link weakly (r = 0.083); no supplement trial cited |
Sources: Cochrane on prevention (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores), the zinc cream trial (Godfrey 2001, Topical Zinc Oxide/Glycine for Cold Sores (Altern Ther Health Med)), and NIH pages on zinc and vitamin C (NIH ODS, Zinc) (NIH ODS, Vitamin C). Our posts on lysine gives more detail on one row.
The rule03
Why can a supplement not be sold to prevent a disease?
Because a product represented to treat, prevent or cure a specific disease is a drug in FDA's eyes (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements).
The disease does not have to be named. FTC says a disease benefit can be implied (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). In 2011 FDA and FTC acted against products sold for sexually transmitted infections, and said no over-the-counter or online supplement can treat or prevent them (HIV.gov, FDA and FTC Act on Fraudulent HIV and STD Products).
That is why a lawful supplement label speaks about structure and function, with the "not evaluated by FDA" disclaimer, and avoids disease words (FDA, Structure/Function Claim Notification). When ad copy hints at outbreaks, read it as a claim to check.

Where does Reviralis stand on this question?
Reviralis Complete is a dietary supplement. No source shows that it or its ingredients prevent or reduce outbreaks.
The label never mentions herpes. The sales page uses outbreak wording, and we quote it as the page's words, never as fact.
It says the product "supports a calm stress response". Stress and recurrence link only weakly (r = 0.083), and no trial of a stress-calming supplement is cited. It also uses "41-in-1 formula", but the label prints 40 names. Each line is answered on the claims page.
What to do05
What should you do instead of relying on a supplement?
Talk to a clinician about repeat outbreaks and ask whether an antiviral or suppression plan fits you.
Keep any prescribed antiviral exactly as directed, and never stop it to try a capsule. Condoms lower, but do not remove, the chance of passing the virus (CDC, About Genital Herpes). Tell a clinician if you are pregnant. See care for a weak immune system, a sore lasting over two weeks, or any eye symptom.
If you still want a supplement, bring the label to your pharmacist. Our post on talking to a clinician about outbreaks gives questions to ask. Read the full supplements and herpes page too.
FAQ06
Reviralis questions people ask
Is there a natural way to stop herpes outbreaks?
We found no natural product shown to stop them. Herpes has no cure, and prescription antivirals are the proven care. Sunscreen has some trial support for UV-linked cold sores. Ask a clinician about a plan that fits you.
Does lysine stop herpes outbreaks?
Cochrane found no evidence of efficacy for lysine in preventing cold sores. Another review found doses under 1 g a day ineffective. Reviralis does not list lysine, so those results do not apply to it.
Can vitamins boost immunity enough to keep herpes away?
No source we found shows that. Vitamin C did not significantly cut colds in the general population, and the NIH page says nothing about herpes. Nutrients are needed for health, which is different from preventing outbreaks.
Can I take a supplement alongside my antiviral?
Ask your pharmacist or clinician first, because some products interact with medicines. Keep taking the antiviral exactly as prescribed. Never skip, stop or lower it because you added a supplement.
Why does the Reviralis sales page mention outbreaks?
It is the page's positioning, and we quote it without repeating it as fact. The label never mentions herpes, and we found no study showing Reviralis prevents or reduces outbreaks.
