Triggers and stress
Herpes Outbreak Triggers: Does Stress Cause Outbreaks?
Herpes outbreak triggers listed by WHO and Mayo Clinic include fever, illness, sun, injury, hormones and stress. Stress does appear linked to recurrence, but weakly: 11 studies gave r = 0.083, with signs of publication bias. Reviralis is a supplement, not an antiviral, and no cited trial shows a stress-reducing capsule changes outbreaks.

The usual suspects01
What triggers herpes outbreaks?
The sources name a short list: illness or fever, sun exposure, hormone changes, skin injury, fatigue, stress, surgery and weakened immunity. None of them works for everyone.
WHO lists illness or fever, sun, menstruation, injury, emotional stress and surgery (WHO, Herpes Simplex Virus Fact Sheet). Mayo Clinic, writing about cold sores, adds fatigue, wind and changes in the immune system (Mayo Clinic, Cold Sore Symptoms and Causes). Many people can name no trigger at all.
| Trigger | WHO | Mayo Clinic |
|---|---|---|
| Illness or fever | Yes | Yes (infection or fever) |
| Sun exposure | Yes | Yes (sun or wind) |
| Hormone changes | Yes (menstruation) | Yes |
| Emotional stress | Yes | Yes |
| Skin injury | Yes | Yes |
| Surgery | Yes | Not listed |
| Fatigue | Not listed | Yes |
| Immune changes | Not listed | Yes |
Stress02
Does stress cause herpes outbreaks?
Stress is linked to recurrence, but the link is weak, and a link is not proof of cause.
A meta-analysis of 11 studies found a correlation of r = 0.083 between stress and herpes recurrence, and the authors saw signs of publication bias (Chida and Mao 2009, Stress and HSV Recurrence (Brain Behav Immun)). In plain words, stress may nudge the odds a little. It does not explain most outbreaks.
Stress can also work in reverse. A painful sore can raise stress, so the arrow may point both ways. Studies like these cannot untangle that.
Sun03
Do sun and sunscreen matter for cold sores?
For sores that follow sun exposure, sunscreen has some trial support, but it is mixed.
A Cochrane review found that sunscreen prevented sores brought on by ultraviolet light in two trials. In a third trial, which used real sun exposure, it did not (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores). So sunscreen is a reasonable habit for lip and face sores, and it is not a guarantee.
It is also cheap, and it carries no interaction worries. Lip balm with sun protection is a simple example.
Your pattern04
How can you find your own triggers?
Keep a short log. Note the date a sore starts and what came before it in the previous three days.
Write the start date
Note the first tingle or itch, not the day a blister appears.
List the last three days
Fever, a cold, long sun exposure, a period, a scrape, or poor sleep.
Look after three or four outbreaks
A repeating item is worth raising with a clinician. A single event proves nothing.
Bring the log to the visit
A clinician can use it to decide whether suppressive therapy suits you.
Supplements and calm05
Can a supplement calm the stress that triggers outbreaks?
No cited trial shows that. The stress link is weak, and we found no trial of a stress-reducing supplement that measured herpes recurrence.
The sales page for Reviralis says the formula "Supports a calm stress response". It also says it can "quiet the internal signal your body sends before an outbreak". The label makes neither statement. Bacopa is the best-studied name on the label for attention, and the blend order caps it at 132.2 mg, while the trial we cite used 300 mg a day of a standardized extract (Calabrese 2008, Bacopa in Older Adults (J Altern Complement Med)). Those trials measured attention, not herpes.
Nothing we found links bacopa, GABA, tyrosine or any other label name to fewer outbreaks. Lowering stress is worthwhile for its own reasons, and sleep, activity and counseling have better footing than a capsule.

Why is it hard to prove a trigger?
Because outbreaks come and go on their own, and people notice what happened just before one.
Repeat outbreaks usually become milder and less frequent over time (CDC, About Genital Herpes). A person who starts a product during a rough patch will often feel better a month later. That is not evidence the product worked.
- There is no cureHerpes simplex virus stays in the body for life. Outbreaks are usually shorter and milder after the first and often become less frequent. (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (WHO, Herpes Simplex Virus Fact Sheet)
- Antivirals are the proven careAcyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir shorten outbreaks, and daily suppression cuts recurrences 70 to 80% in people with frequent ones. A clinician prescribes them. (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (CDC, STI Treatment Guidelines: Herpes) (WHO, Herpes Simplex Virus Fact Sheet)
- It can spread without a soreThe virus can pass between partners when no sore is visible. Condoms lower the risk but do not remove it. (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (WHO, Herpes Simplex Virus Fact Sheet)
- Triggers are known, but not fully understoodWHO lists illness or fever, sun, menstruation, injury, stress and surgery; Mayo adds fatigue, hormones and immune changes. (WHO, Herpes Simplex Virus Fact Sheet) (Mayo Clinic, Cold Sore Symptoms and Causes)
- Stress is linked only weaklyEleven studies found a weak link between stress and recurrence, with signs of publication bias. A link is not proof of cause. (Chida and Mao 2009, Stress and HSV Recurrence (Brain Behav Immun))
- Sunscreen has some trial support for sun-triggered soresTwo trials found sunscreen prevented sores brought on by UV light; a third did not. (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores)
- Lysine did not hold upA Cochrane review found no evidence it prevents cold sores. (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores) (Mailoo and Rampes 2017, Lysine Review (Integr Med))
- Zinc cream, not zinc capsulesThe one herpes-specific zinc trial tested a cream in 46 people: 5.0 days against 6.5. (Godfrey 2001, Topical Zinc Oxide/Glycine for Cold Sores (Altern Ther Health Med)) (NIH ODS, Zinc)
- Tell a clinician if you are pregnantHerpes passed to a newborn is serious, and care in pregnancy is planned with a clinician. (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (CDC, STI Treatment Guidelines: Herpes)
What helps07
What actually reduces herpes outbreaks?
Daily suppressive therapy with a prescription antiviral. The CDC says it reduces recurrences by 70 to 80% in people who have them often (CDC, About Genital Herpes).
That is a clinician's decision, taken with the person's history, sores and partners in mind. The full list of drugs is on antivirals and clinician care. The wider facts are in herpes basics.
Reviralis is not an antiviral. If you take one, keep taking it, and see a clinician about outbreaks that are frequent, severe or near the eyes.
- Painful sores near the eyesHerpes in or near the eye can harm sight. Get care the same day.
- A first outbreak, or sores you are unsure aboutA clinician can confirm what it is and talk about antivirals and partner safety.
- Sores that do not heal in 2 to 3 weeksOr frequent outbreaks. Ask about daily suppression.
- A weakened immune systemOutbreaks can be longer or more severe. Tell your clinician about any outbreak.
- Fever, stiff neck, severe headache or confusionCall 911 or go to an emergency room.
- Pregnant, or a new baby with sores or feverCall a clinician or emergency care right away.
From the CDC and Mayo Clinic (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (CDC, STI Treatment Guidelines: Herpes) (Mayo Clinic, Cold Sore Symptoms and Causes). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.
The Reviralis label08
Does Reviralis target outbreak triggers?
No source shows it does. The label lists vitamins, minerals and a 661 mg blend of 18 names, and it never mentions triggers.
The nutrients are real ones: vitamin C 125 mg, zinc 10 mg and selenium 50 mcg per two capsules. But the NIH fact sheets cover colds, not herpes (NIH ODS, Zinc) (NIH ODS, Vitamin C). FDA treats a supplement sold for a named disease as a drug (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). Check each ad line on immune support claims.
FAQ09
Outbreak triggers and stress: common questions
What are the most common cold sore triggers?
Fever or illness, sun exposure, hormone changes, skin injury, fatigue and stress are the ones Mayo Clinic and WHO list. Triggers differ from person to person, and many people can name none. A short log helps you spot your own pattern.
Does stress really cause herpes outbreaks?
It is linked, but weakly. A meta-analysis of 11 studies found r = 0.083 and signs of publication bias. A link is not proof of cause, and a painful sore can also raise stress, so the cause may run both ways.
Can sunscreen stop sun-triggered cold sores?
It can help in some cases. A Cochrane review found sunscreen prevented sores brought on by ultraviolet light in two trials but not in a third that used natural sun. It is a sensible habit, not a guarantee.
Can a supplement lower stress and so keep outbreaks away?
No cited trial shows this. The stress link is weak and no trial of a stress-reducing supplement measured herpes recurrence. Prescription antivirals are the proven way to lower recurrences, and a clinician decides on them.
Why do outbreaks seem to fade over time?
Repeat outbreaks are usually shorter and milder than the first and often become less frequent, according to the CDC. This natural pattern can make any product started during a rough patch look as if it worked.
Does Reviralis calm the stress response?
The sales page says so, in quotes, but the label does not, and no source we found tested the product. Bacopa is capped at 132.2 mg per serving by label order, below the 300 mg used in one trial.
