When is a cold sore contagious?
A cold sore can spread from the first tingle until the skin has healed, and the virus can also pass when no sore is visible. Does anything shorten the stages?
Prescription antivirals are the proven care. CDC says acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir shorten outbreaks, and daily use lowers recurrences in people who have them often (CDC, About Genital Herpes) (CDC, STI Treatment Guidelines: Herpes).
Herpes has no cure. A clinician decides whether you need medicine and how to take it, and some plans start at the first tingle. Keep any prescribed medicine as directed.

When should a cold sore be seen by a clinician?
See a clinician if a sore lasts more than two weeks, comes back often, or if your immune system is weak. Mayo also lists an eye that feels gritty or painful as a reason to call (Mayo Clinic, Cold Sore Symptoms and Causes).
