Dietary Supplement vs Drug: What Separates the Two Under FDA Rules
A dietary supplement vs drug comes down to purpose and proof. A drug is approved by FDA before sale for a stated use. A supplement needs no approval and may not be presented as treating, preventing or curing a disease. Reviralis Complete is sold as a supplement, so it is not an antiviral.

The line01
What is the difference between a dietary supplement and a drug?
The difference is the stated purpose and the proof required. A drug must be shown to work for its use before sale. A supplement is not approved by FDA before it is sold (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements).
FDA explains that a product represented, explicitly or implicitly, for the treatment, prevention or cure of a specific disease is treated as a drug (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). So the same capsule can be a supplement in one description and a drug in another. The words used to sell it decide.
Side by side02
How do supplements and drugs compare?
They differ on approval, claims and who proves what. The table sets out the main points.
| Point | Dietary supplement | Drug |
|---|---|---|
| FDA approval before sale | Not required (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements) | Required for a stated use |
| May claim to treat a disease | No | Yes, if approved for it |
| May describe structure or function | Yes, with limits (FDA, Structure/Function Claim Notification) | Not the main route |
| Label panel | Supplement Facts | Drug Facts |
| Example here | Reviralis Complete | Acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir |
Implied claims03
Can a supplement claim a disease without naming it?
Yes, and that is the trap. FTC states that a health claim can be made by implication, even when the disease is never named (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
The label of Reviralis Complete never mentions herpes, outbreaks or flare-ups. The sales page does speak of "outbreak" and "flare-ups" and says the product helps "quiet the internal signal your body sends before an outbreak" (Reviralis sales page). We quote these as the seller's words only. The site does not rule on a legal question, but it does check the words against evidence.
Regulators have acted on products sold online for sexually transmitted infections, and say no over-the-counter or online supplement can treat or prevent them (HIV.gov, FDA and FTC Act on Fraudulent HIV and STD Products).

What should a buyer do with this difference?
Treat a supplement as a supplement. Do not swap it for a medicine, and read disease-flavored wording as a flag, not a promise.
Herpes has no cure. Prescription antivirals are the proven care, and no source we found shows that Reviralis reduces outbreaks. If a clinician prescribed an antiviral, keep taking it. See a clinician about sores near the eye.
The full claim-by-claim check is on the benefits page. Other label terms are in the guide to structure and function claims.
FAQ05
Reviralis questions people ask
Does FDA approve dietary supplements?
No. Supplements are not approved by FDA before they are sold (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). The maker is responsible for the product and its labeling. That is one reason a supplement cannot claim to treat a disease the way an approved drug can.
Can a supplement be a drug?
Yes, by how it is presented. If a product is represented for the treatment, prevention or cure of a specific disease, FDA treats it as a drug (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). An implied disease claim can count even when the disease is never named.
Is Reviralis a drug?
No. Reviralis Complete is sold as a dietary supplement. Its label makes no disease claim and it is not an antiviral. The sales page wording is quoted and checked on our claims pages, where no study of the product is found.
How can I tell the two apart on a bottle?
Look at the panel title. A supplement prints Supplement Facts; an over-the-counter drug prints Drug Facts. Also read the claims. A line naming or implying a disease points toward a drug, not a supplement.
