Mayo Clinic describes a cold sore as a blister that usually crusts and clears within two to four weeks (Mayo Clinic, Cold Sore Symptoms and Causes). Which cold sore home remedies are unproven?
Most remedies found online have no trial behind them, and the ones we can test against evidence mostly come up short.
Lysine is the best known example. A Cochrane review found no evidence of efficacy for preventing cold sores (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores), and another review found doses under 1 g a day ineffective (Mailoo and Rampes 2017, Lysine Review (Integr Med)). Reviralis does not list lysine at all.
