How to Count Ingredients on a Supplement Label: A Four-Step Method

Quick answer

To count ingredients on a label, number each named line in the Supplement Facts box and each name inside a blend, then leave out the other ingredients. On Reviralis Complete that gives 22 vitamin and mineral lines plus 18 blend names, which is 40. A headline of 41 needs a name to be counted twice.

The question01

Why count the ingredients on a supplement label at all?

Counting turns a marketing number into something you can check. A headline such as "41-in-1" is a claim, and the label is the record it should match.

Q: Can two honest counts differ? A: Yes, if they use different rules. One may count only active names, another may count every word that looks like a name. Say which rule you use, then count.

The method02

How do I count the names step by step?

Use four steps, in this order. Each one is a rule you can write beside your tally.

  1. Count the lines with amounts

Each vitamin or mineral row in the Supplement Facts box is one name. Reviralis prints 22.

  2. Count the names inside each blend

A blend is one row but many names. The Reviralis blend lists 18, so the panel gives 22 + 18 = 40.

  3. Leave out brackets that repeat a name

A form in brackets, such as "(as beta carotene)" or "(400 mcg Folic Acid)", describes the line above it.

  4. Set the other ingredients aside

Cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide are four fillers and a shell, not the named nutrients.

Try it03

Can I count all the Reviralis names interactively?

Yes. Count the 40 names below one at a time, then switch on folic acid to see how a count of 41 appears.

The label names 40. Teal chips are vitamin and mineral lines with a printed amount; green chips are blend names with no amount.

The folate line prints "680 mcg DFE (400 mcg Folic Acid)", so one honest way to reach 41 is to count folic acid as well. We cannot tell how the sales page counts, and its own list has fewer names than its headline (Reviralis sales page). A count is not a measure of quality: more names do not mean more of any one of them.

The sales page uses a count of 41 and lists 36 names in its own text (Reviralis sales page). We cannot tell how it counts. Our wider review is on the 41-in-1 claim.

Side by side04

Why can a headline count differ from the label count?

A headline count can differ because the counting rule is not stated. The table sets out three counts for the same product.

With folic acid counted again41The folate line plus the folic acid in its bracket

The folate line is one ingredient written twice: 680 mcg DFE and 400 mcg folic acid. See what DFE means.

Meaning05

Does a bigger ingredient count mean a stronger product?

No. A count says how many names are on the label, not how much of each is in the capsule or whether any works.

Inside the Reviralis blend, 18 names share 661 mg, and the label prints no single amount (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts Panel). A longer list means smaller shares. Check the amounts, not only the count.

Reviralis and herpes

No count of ingredients changes the facts. Herpes has no cure, and prescription antivirals are the proven care (CDC, About Genital Herpes). Reviralis is not an antiviral, and no source we found shows it prevents or reduces outbreaks. Keep any prescribed antiviral.

FAQ06

Reviralis questions people ask

How many ingredients does Reviralis have?

The label prints 40 names: 22 vitamin and mineral lines and 18 names in the 661 mg blend. Four other ingredients, the capsule shell and fillers, are listed separately. Counting the folic acid bracket again gives 41.

Do I count the other ingredients?

Usually not. Other ingredients are the shell and fillers, not the named nutrients or extracts. If you count them, say so. For Reviralis, adding the four would give 44, which no one claims.

Is a name in brackets a separate ingredient?

No, a bracket normally describes the form of the line above it. In vitamin A, 'as beta carotene' names the source. In folate, '400 mcg Folic Acid' names the form. Counting the bracket again double-counts one ingredient.

Should I trust a number in an ad?

Check it against the label. An ad number is a claim, and the label is the record. If the two differ, ask which counting rule the ad uses, and treat the label count as the one you can verify.
