Sunscreen and Cold Sores: Does Lip Protection Prevent Repeats?

Quick answer

Sunscreen may prevent cold sores that sunlight sets off, but the evidence is thin. Two trials found it prevented repeats brought on by ultraviolet light, and a third found no benefit for sun-triggered ones. It does not cure herpes. Reviralis Complete is a supplement and no source shows it prevents outbreaks.

The trials02

What did the sunscreen trials find?

Sunscreen prevented repeats in two trials where ultraviolet light was the trigger, and did not in a third where ordinary sun exposure was.

That is the summary in the Cochrane review on preventing cold sores (Chi 2015, Cochrane: Preventing Cold Sores). The split matters. A lab setting that delivers measured ultraviolet light is not the same as a day at the beach with wind, heat and tiredness.

Trial 2UV-induced recurrenceSunscreen prevented repeats

We give no sample sizes or percentages here, because we did not gather them. Treat the table as a map of the evidence, not a score.

In practice03

Is it still sensible to use sunscreen on your lips?

Yes, if sun seems to be your trigger, lip protection is a low-risk habit worth trying.

It will not stop every repeat, and the evidence does not promise it will. It also has other benefits for lip skin. Read the label of any lip product and use one without ingredients that irritate you.

  • Apply before long spells in strong sun or wind.
  • Reapply after eating, drinking or swimming.
  • Keep your own lip product while a sore is active, and do not share it.
  • Note what you did before each outbreak, so a clinician can see a pattern.

A short diary helps more than a guess. Our overview of triggers and stress explains how to keep one.

Proven care04

Does sunscreen replace an antiviral?

No. Prescription antivirals are the proven care for people with frequent repeats.

The CDC says antivirals shorten outbreaks, and daily suppression lowers recurrences and the chance of passing the virus to a partner (CDC, About Genital Herpes). Sunscreen addresses one possible trigger. It does nothing for the virus itself.

Herpes has no cure. If you take an antiviral, keep taking it as prescribed. Ask your clinician whether a suppression plan fits you, using our post on talking to a clinician as a prompt.

Supplements05

Would a supplement like Reviralis protect against sun triggers?

We found no source showing that it would. Reviralis Complete is a dietary supplement, not an antiviral and not a sunscreen.

The label lists vitamin C, zinc, selenium and a 661 mg blend, and the front panel mentions antioxidants. An icon is not a result. The label never mentions herpes, and no study of the product exists in our sources.

Read each of the sales page claims against the evidence on the claims page. A supplement is no stand-in for lip protection or a prescribed medicine.

FAQ06

Reviralis questions people ask

Does sunscreen prevent cold sores?

It may prevent those set off by ultraviolet light. Two trials supported it for UV-induced repeats and a third found no benefit for sun-induced ones. It is a sensible habit if sun is your trigger, not a proven way to stop all repeats.

What SPF is best for cold sores?

We did not find a trial naming one SPF level, so we cannot pick a number. Choose a lip product you will use often, reapply as the label directs, and ask a pharmacist if you want a specific recommendation.

Can wind also trigger a cold sore?

Mayo Clinic lists sun or wind among possible triggers. Triggers vary a lot between people. A short diary of what happened before each sore is the best way to spot your own pattern.

Is sunscreen enough if I have frequent outbreaks?

Probably not alone. Frequent repeats are a reason to see a clinician, who may discuss a daily antiviral. The CDC says suppression lowers recurrences. Sunscreen can be an add-on, not a replacement.

Does Reviralis protect against sun-triggered outbreaks?

No source shows that. Reviralis is a dietary supplement, not an antiviral or a sunscreen, and its label does not mention herpes. Use lip protection, keep prescribed medicine and ask a clinician.
