How Do You Read a Certificate of Analysis for a Supplement?

Quick answer

A certificate of analysis is a lab report for one lot of a supplement. It lists the lot, the tests, the limits and the results. A code or number that points to a certificate is not the certificate. Reviralis has a seller reference, but we have not seen the report behind it.

The document01

What is a certificate of analysis for a supplement?

It is a report from a lab, tied to one lot, that says what tests were run and what they found.

People shorten it to CoA. A real one reads like a lab sheet, not like an ad. It is dated, it names the lab, and it can be traced to a batch.

The FDA does not approve supplements before sale (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements), so a CoA is not a government document. It is a private record. It is as useful as the lab behind it and the lot it names.

The parts02

What should a certificate of analysis show?

Seven things: the product, the lot, the lab, the tests, the limits, the results and the date.

Parts of a certificate of analysis and what each one proves
PartWhat to look forIf it is missing
Product nameMatches the bottleCould be another product
Lot numberMatches the base of your bottleReport may not cover your lot
Lab nameA named lab with contact detailsNo one to ask
Tests and methodsIdentity, strength, contaminants, microbesTest list unclear
Limits and resultsA number beside each limit"Pass" with no figure
Date and signatureA date within the shelf lifeCannot place it in time

A line that says "passed" with no figure is a summary. Ask for the full sheet.

What does the Reviralis certificate reference mean?

It is a seller reference. The seller gives lot R-26/IR-5592 and certificate R-5592-26-IR, and we have not seen a lab report behind either one.

A reference alone is not proof, for three reasons. A code is easy to print. It may point to a sheet that covers another lot. And a code cannot tell you which lab did the work.

The label itself prints no lot or best-before date that we could read on the flat image, so we cannot match the seller's lot to a bottle. Compare the code on the base of your own bottle with the seller's reference, and write to the seller if they differ. The steps are in how to check a lot number.

What we do not claim

We do not say the lot passed or failed anything. We say a report would let you see for yourself, and we have not seen one.

What a CoA cannot do04

Does a clean certificate of analysis mean a supplement works?

No. A CoA speaks to what is in a sample, not to what the product does.

Reviralis is a dietary supplement and not an antiviral. Herpes has no cure, and prescription antivirals are the proven care. No source we found shows that Reviralis prevents or reduces outbreaks. A report that shows the label amounts are right still would not show that. Keep any prescribed antiviral and talk to a clinician about outbreaks.

A CoA also cannot split the 661 mg blend for you unless the report lists each name. See the 661 mg blend page for the ceilings the label order allows, and the batch page for the seller's references.

FAQ05

Reviralis questions people ask

Who issues a certificate of analysis?

A testing lab issues it, either an outside lab or the maker's own. Look for the lab's name and contact details on the sheet, since a report with no named lab cannot be checked or questioned.

Is a certificate of analysis the same as a lot number?

No. A lot number names a batch of product. A certificate of analysis is the lab report that should name that same lot. Match the two before you trust the report to describe your bottle.

Can a seller print a certificate that is not real?

Yes, which is why a bare reference is weak proof. Ask for the full sheet, check that the lab is named and the lot matches, and write to the lab if you want to confirm it issued the report.

Where can I find the Reviralis certificate?

The seller lists a certificate reference, but we have not seen the report itself. Write to the seller through the contact page and ask for the full lab sheet for your lot.
