What Is GMP for Supplements, and How Can a Buyer Ask About It?

Quick answer

GMP stands for good manufacturing practice. For supplements it is a set of federal rules on how a product is made, tested, labeled and recorded, so that each bottle holds what the label says. The Reviralis label does not print a GMP statement, so a buyer has to ask the seller for proof.

The rulebook01

What is GMP in a supplement?

GMP is good manufacturing practice: the written rules for making a supplement the same way each time and proving it with records.

For dietary supplements the FDA has a GMP rule of its own. It covers the plant and its equipment, the staff, the ingredients coming in, the batch records, testing, packaging, labeling and complaints. A maker must also test for identity, purity, strength and composition, and keep the results.

Q: Does GMP mean the FDA signed off on the product? A: No. Supplements are not approved before sale (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements). GMP is a set of duties the maker must meet, and the agency can check them afterward.

What it covers02

What does GMP cover, and what can it not promise?

It covers process and records. It cannot promise that a supplement works, or that it is right for you.

The label rule for blends is separate. It requires the total weight and the order, not each amount (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts Panel).

What to ask03

How can a buyer ask a seller about GMP?

Ask in writing, ask for a document, and ask who issued it and when.

  1. Ask who makes the capsules

The Reviralis label names the distributor, Phyto Thrive Labs, not a maker. Ask for the maker's name and site.

  2. Ask for the GMP audit

Ask whether the maker has been audited against the supplement GMP rule, by whom, and on what date.

  3. Ask for the lot report

Ask for the lab report that goes with your lot, not a generic one. See what a certificate of analysis shows.

  4. Keep the reply

Save the email. A clear answer with a document is worth more than a line on a web page.

Contacts are on the contact page. The label's distributor email and the order desk are different addresses, and the page sorts them out.

This product04

Does Reviralis state that it follows GMP?

The label we read does not. It says "Made in the USA with globally sourced ingredients" and names the distributor, with no GMP line.

The seller gives a lot and a certificate reference, which we treat as seller references and not lab proof. We have not seen a GMP audit for the maker, and we do not claim one exists.

Reviralis is a dietary supplement and not an antiviral. Herpes has no cure, and prescription antivirals are the proven care. No source we found shows that Reviralis prevents or reduces outbreaks. A well-run plant would not change that, so keep any prescribed medicine and see a clinician about outbreaks. More on the quality and seals page.

FAQ05

Reviralis questions people ask

What does cGMP mean on a supplement?

The c stands for current. It means the maker follows the manufacturing rules as they stand today. It is a statement by the maker, and the FDA does not approve or certify a supplement site for it.

Is GMP the same as third-party tested?

No. GMP describes how a maker runs its plant and records. Third-party testing means an outside lab tested a sample of a lot. A product can have one, both or neither, so ask about each separately.

Who checks that a supplement maker follows GMP?

The FDA can inspect sites against the rule, and private auditors can check a site if the maker hires them. An inspection is a snapshot, so a clean result on one day does not guarantee every later lot.

Can a GMP claim be false?

Yes. A claim is only as good as the document behind it. If a seller says GMP, ask who audited, when, and for which site, and treat a vague answer as a gap in the claim.
